Mouse Imaging with Whole-Body MRI Scanners

چکیده
Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been used in clinical applications for several decades. It offers a physician excellent anatomic detail and tissue characterization. Within the past decade, advances in MRI allowed us to image with a sub-millimetre in-plane resolution. Achieving such reduction in voxel volume require novel technological developments in every aspect of the MRI acquisition process: RF and gradient hardware and pulse sequence software. At the same time there is growing interest in Magnetic Resonance Microscopy studies of small animal models of human disease. In general MR microscopy studies can be done exclusively on a specialized imager equipped with a small bore gradient coil. We have developed new techniques for inserting a custom designed and built, high-strength gradient coil into an existing clinical MR imager. Such inserts can produce strong gradient fields that lead to maximum spatial resolution and excellent signal sensitivity. We describe the interfacing and calibration methods that we developed for our custom inserts in both 1.5T and 3T General Electric MR scanners. We show that all tests have met the specifications of the clinical gradient coil. The implemetation of our method allow for switching between clinical and research modes without having to purchase and maintain another MR system.

Non-uniformity of Clinical Head, Head and Neck, and Body Coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Introduction Signal intensity uniformity in a magnetic resonance (MR) image indicates how well the MR imaging (MRI) system represents an object. One of the major sources of image non-uniformity in high-field MRI scanners is inhomogeneity of radio-frequency coil. The aim of this study was to investigate non-uniformity in head, head and neck, and body coils and compare the obtained results to det...
متن کاملEvaluation of MRI-based Polymer Gel Dosimetry for Measurement of CT Dose Index (CTDI) on 64 slices CT Scanners
Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) has numerous applications in clinical procedures but its main problem is its high radiation dose to the patients compared to other imaging modalities using x-ray. CT delivers approximately high doses to the nearby tissues due to the scattering effect, fan beam (beam divergence) and limited collimator efficiency. The radiation dose from multi-slice scanners...
متن کاملDoes Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?
MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields. While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and h...
متن کاملAtlas-based attenuation correction for small animal PET/MRI scanners
Small animal PET/MRI scanners producing anatomically co-registered simultaneously-acquired images of morphology, function and metabolic activity have become available and are expected to have a huge positive impact on the pre-clinical imaging field. Attenuation correction (AC) necessary for accurate quantification of PET signals is challenging in these scanners because the measured anatomical m...
